You might not suppose this but adopting a vegan weight loss program may assist you to lose weight. When a study was carried out back in 2005 that was reported in the American Journal of Medicine it showed that a vegan food plan was an efficient means for shedding weight.
Healthy Food And Vegan Diets

Eating right or eating healthy is sometimes easier said than done. With so many processed foods, fast foods, canned goods, junk foods, and meat products around, what can you expect but to see more people gaining weight excessively, much more know a few who eventually suffer from health conditions due to excessive weight gain. So, whether you are among these people or not, it's high time you consider eating healthy as early as now. But eating healthy may mean different things to different people. For one, it may mean going on vegan diets, eating raw foods, and choosing healthy superfoods than processed ones.

What is a vegan diet?

Vegan diet is another term for vegetarianism. This is a natural way of losing weight and staying healthy. However, when one says that he is on a vegan diet, it does not necessarily mean that he no longer eats animal foods. Although some people do, in some cases, doctors still recommend some modifications on this diet. That is why before you go on this kind of diet, you have to note its subtypes to know which one is suited for you.

What are the four subtypes of vegan diets?

Vegan diets are subdivided into four subtypes known as semi-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, and lacto-ovo vegetarian. Although all of these focus on vegetables as the main part of your diet, in some subtypes you may be allowed to eat animal products and by-products. In semi-vegetarian, for example, you can still eat poultry and fish, however you are restricted from eating all kinds of red meat such as lamb, beef, and pork. Meanwhile, in pesco-vegetarian, you are allowed to eat fish and other seafood, but restricted from all animal products. This is almost the same with lacto-vegetarian, except that in this, you may be allowed to enjoy milk and dairy, but not eggs, poultry, and meath. Lastly, in lacto-ovo vegetarian, you cannot eat animal meat but can still enjoy its by-products like dairy, eggs, animal oils, and milk.

What are the benefits of vegan diets?

Just like in health food raw diet, the two main benefits of vegan diets are also weight loss and good health. Try to eat more vegetables and no or very little meat every meal and you will notice a change in your weight after a certain period. Why is this possible? Because vegetables are rich in nutrients, but less in fat and cholesterol unlike meat products. So, the more you consume veggies, the less you are likely to become obese. And with a vegan diet, of course you'll feel healthier. Why? Because having normal weight means you are also not prone to diseases related to excessive weight gain like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. With the antioxidants present in vegetables, your body is able to eliminate free radicals that are the leading causes of cell death and diseases.

Indeed, it's true that eating healthy and eating right is easier said than done. But if you keep this important information in mind about health food and vegan diets, you will come to realize that it is not as difficult as you think. Now, why don't you try to learn more about eating right and staying healthy? David Wolfe, a known nutrition expert, has a lot to share to you about raw foods, vegan diets, and sunfood nutrition.

Vegetarian Diet

Vegetarian diet could enable arthritis patients to protect themselves against heart attacks and strokes, a research has suggested. Rheumatoid arthritis can afflict people of any age, being more common in women than men. The condition, which is distinct from the more common osteoarthritis, is caused by the immune system attacking the lining of the patient's joints, causing them to become inflamed and painful.

To keep your vegetarian diet on track, you may find using a vegetarian food pyramid helpful. This pyramid outlines various food groups and food choices that, if eaten in the right quantities, form the foundation of a healthy vegetarian diet.

A vegetarian diet focuses on plants for food. These include fruits, vegetables, dried beans and peas, grains, seeds and nuts. People who follow vegetarian diets can get all the nutrients they need. However, they must be careful to eat a wide variety of foods to meet their nutritional needs. Nutrients vegetarians may need to focus on include protein, iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin B12.

Diet Characteristics

Dietary data from vegetarians across the world that enjoyed the lowest recorded rates of chronic diseases and the highest adult life expectancy show a pattern similar to the one illustrated in the list below. The healthfulness of this pattern is corroborated by epidemiological and experimental nutrition.

The people who gave up eating meat lose tone or become weaker? My answer would be that in the majority of cases they confidently stated that they found themselves stronger and more powerful in body.

Ensuring adequate nutrition

Protein: You don't need to eat foods from animals to have enough protein in your diet. Plant proteins alone can provide enough of the essential and non-essential amino acids, as long as sources of dietary protein are varied and caloric intake is high enough to meet energy needs.

Iron: Vegetarians may have a greater risk of iron deficiency than nonvegetarians. The richest sources of iron are red meat, liver and egg yolk -- all high in cholesterol. However, dried beans, spinach, enriched products, brewer's yeast and dried fruits are all good plant sources of iron.

Calcium: This mineral helps build and maintain strong teeth and bones. Low-fat dairy foods and dark green vegetables, such as spinach, turnip and collard greens, kale, and broccoli, are good sources of calcium. Tofu enriched with calcium and fortified soy milk and fruit juices are other options.

Sodium: The recognition that modifying renal excretory capacity for sodium and thus changing sodium balance can induce high B.P. in experimental animals focussed attention on sodium as the principle nutritional factor in the development of high B.P. Epidemiological surveys are often cited as proof that excessive sodium intake increases the prevalence of high B.P.

Vitamin D: Apart from sunlight (ultraviolet rays trigger vitamin D synthesis in the skin), the only other sources are foods like eggs, milk and fish. Vitamin D deficiency is common even in sunny India, and if prolonged, it can cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Take vitamin D supplements if you don’t get enough sun.

Can you have a balanced vegetarian diet without nuts?

I have two daughters, one hates meat and the other has said for some while that she would like to be a vegetarian because she can't bear the thought of eating animals. I really like vegetarian food so it would be no problem for me.

But the daughter who hates meat (and also most vegetables) is very allergic to nuts, both peanuts and some tree nuts. Does anyone know if it would still be possible for her to have a balanced diet, and how?

Yes, easily. Nuts are a fairly good source of protein but they mostly get their calories from fat. They're a good snack but shouldn't be the staple source of protein in anyone's diet - too high in fat and calories.

Try switching all the white and refined grains (white bread, white rice) to whole grains and brown rice. Try new types of whole grains like barley or quinoa. Whole grains are made from the entire grain - most white pasta is made from wheat that has been stripped of the most nutritious, high fiber and high protein layers. In fact, it's so unhealthy that there are mandates for companies that use white flour to refortify it after the processing takes place. Whole grains are naturally high in protein and fiber and are the natural state of the grain and are head and shoulders above refined grains and "white" bread and pasta products.

Beans and legumes are VERY high in protein, fiber and nutrients. Try different kinds - kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, split peas. Make soups, stews, chili. You can make burger-like patties out of black beans. They are so versatile and wonderful.

Try soy products - soy is a complete protein that the USDA and FDA both admit to being as substantial and nutritious as animal protein. Buy a few trays of tofu, or go to Whole Foods or another natural foods store and try tempeh (which is a brick of fermented soybeans).

Look up recipes - this is vital to learn how to work with these foods. Just like someone that has never cooked with chicken breast before or has no idea what to do with it would probably cook something that's a total, hideous mess, the same would happen with never finding out how to use tofu or tempeh. If used properly you can have a huge range of delicious meals - I make tempeh stroganoff, tofu and veggie stir fry, tofu nuggets, etc.

The Vegetarian Diet

The following paragraphs summarize the work of diet experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of The Vegetarian Diet. Heed their advice to avoid any diet surprises.

If you find yourself confused by what you've read to this point, don't despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

If you've been to any large banquets recently, you may have noticed people passing up the prime rib and baked chicken in order to feast on a vegetarian meal. Vegetarianism seems to be gaining in popularity each year, spurred on by health concerns, weight difficulties, and celebrity endorsements. You may find that a vegetarian diet is the key to weight loss in your particular case.

First of all, it is important to define the vegetarian diet. You may be surprised to learn that there are actually a variety of vegetarian diets in use today. In some cases, vegetarians eat only fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts. In other cases, they may also eat cheese and drink milk, while in still other cases, they may eat eggs.

One of the advantages to the vegetarian diet is that it tends to be low in fat and cholesterol. As a result, a vegetarian diet can help you avoid heart problems and even cancer. However, you may also find that you are missing some important vitamins and minerals on a strictly vegetarian diet.

It has been said that the key to a successful vegetarian diet is planning. You must decide what you will be eating for every meal in order to ensure that you receive the proper nutrients. Otherwise, you may end up starving your body of the nutrients you need in order to be healthy.

A major benefit of the vegetarian diet is that it tends to involve a healthy serving of fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains. However, getting enough protein can be a challenge. Therefore, you might consider adding soy to your diet, which is high in protein content. Another important consideration is iron. You'll need to make sure that you eat spinach and beans in order to guarantee that you receive enough iron, since you will not be consuming customary sources of iron such as liver and roast beef.

You may need to supplement your diet with vitamins in order to ensure that you receive the appropriate amount of B-12, Vitamin D, calcium, and zinc. Otherwise, you'll have to load up on cereals, soy milk, spinach, and broccoli. Also, eating a vegetarian diet does not mean you have a license to eat as many sugary foods as you want. You'll still have to restrict high-calorie foods.

Variety has been called the spice of life and it is also the key to an effective vegetarian diet. You'll need to eat an array of fruits and vegetables. Also, if you do use dairy, be sure that you choose non-fat or low-fat milk and cheese. Since eggs are rich in cholesterol, you should eat them only in moderation.

Studies have shown that vegetarians tend to consume fewer calories each day than meat-eaters. Also, the body mass index—a tool used to measure obesity—is generally lower for vegetarians than for the population at large. However, as a vegetarian, you will still need to pay attention to portion control and calorie counts. Therefore, while vegetarianism may not be a panacea for weight loss, it can certainly help in the battle against the bulge.

However, it should be noted here that some people mistakenly look upon vegetarianism as a quick fix. They figure that if they give up meat for a couple of weeks, they'll lose weight. Then, after their trial period is over, they go back to their old eating habits. This is a bad pattern because it encourages yo yo dieting. If you decide to go on a vegetarian diet, it is very important that you stick with it. Otherwise, you may be greatly disappointed in your weight loss progress.

Vegetarianism is not for everyone. However, if you enjoy fruits and vegetables, are non-committal about meat, and are good at planning meals, you may want to go vegan. But if you do not fall into that category, another diet plan may be preferable. Which diet program you ultimately choose may depend greatly upon your personal preferences and what kind of diet regimen you are prepared to follow over the long run. The key to any successful diet is commitment; you must be determined to succeed.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn about The Vegetarian Diet may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

Is it morally preferable to be vegetarian than to eat meat, poultry, and eggs produced in factory farms?

Is it morally preferable to be vegetarian than to eat meat, poultry, and eggs produced in factory farms? Do conditions in those farms impose a moral duty to adopt a vegetarian diet? Why or why not?

No, it is not for me and other people thinking with logic. The only way to curb factory farms is to curb population.

Why do I keep being laughed at for my near-vegetarian diet?

I have given up eating any kind of meat...except for fish. I know fish is not considered meat, but when I discuss my diet habits with other people they keep on teasing me because I am eating fish. I know my diet is not 100% vegetarian since I also eat eggs but I mean, if I don't clssify myself as a vegetarian I do not get any food when out or in parties or whatnot. I have also heard I should give up on fish and eggs because [...]. I do not want to give them up, I like them and if I do I will excessively limit my cooking and pastry-making options. What do you think, do I have any arguments to pose against these people?

Some vegetarians think they own the word. Most of the world's vegetarians eat fish and seafood. They are called pescetarians. Fish is a very important part of a vegetarian diet. Don't let the closed minded get you down.
