Weight Loss and the Glycemic Index

I'm sure that many people have been through the consequences of a "sugar crash" without really appreciating what was going on within their body. Then, as soon as our blood sugar drops below a certain point, the body responds by bringing about an overall feeling of low energy... I'm sure you've 'been there'. The human body operates much better when it is given a steady, continuous source of blood sugar. Therefore by using the glycemic index, we can make conscious food choices that will help give us a progressive and regular supply of glucose into the bloodstream, resulting in a continual supply of energy as we continue through our day.

The glycemic index is a method of ranking foods related to the effect that they have on the levels of sugar (glucose) in our blood, but more specifically with regards to carbohydrates. Items that are high in protein or fat don't tend to produce the same sudden rise in blood glucose levels. The GI determines the amount that a 50-gram portion of carbohydrates spikes the blood-sugar levels (normally within a 2 hour period after eating) and weighs that against a control; typically pure glucose and/or white bread. All carbohydrates cause a brief increase in our blood glucose level (called the glycemic response), but not all carbohydrates work the same way. Also, the amount of food taken, the type of carb, and how it's prepared, as well as how it's processed all have an effect on the glycemic response.

Each food type within the glycemic index are given a ranking that falls between 1 to 100... 100 being the rating number for pure glucose. Foods that are deemed high, rank greater than 70, medium foods rank from 56 to 69 on the index (GI) and foods that are regarded as low, score less than 55. So taking pretzels as an example... they have a score of 81 on the index and therefore regarded as high. A fruit cocktail is deemed mid-range with a ranking of 56 and broccoli is regarded as low with a ranking of 15. The slower our body processes food, the slower insulin is released which sees a healthier outcome on the body. So, the idea is to limit consumption of the foods with a high glycemic index score and consume more of the foods with low values on the index. An increase in body weight is then better controlled because by eating foods that raise blood sugar levels slowly, you tend to sustain that feeling of fullness for longer periods.

The index is certainly more about quality of carbohydrates, and not about quantity. However the amount we consume does make a difference when we start analyzing glycemic load values, but the measurement of food within the glycemic index is not connected to the size of the portion. Whether it's 10 grams or 1000 grams, it's the same score (number). When individuals use the glycemic index to make healthier meals, it helps to keep our blood-sugar levels in control. Researchers made assumptions in the 80's that our bodies absorbed and broke down simple sugars rapidly, creating immediate increases in blood glucose levels which of course, at that time, led to the assumption that we should avoid sugar. They now know that simple sugars don't cause the blood glucose to spike any faster than some complex carbohydrates do. But don't forget these sugars are still empty calories and should still be eliminated where possible. With things like regular exercise, decreased saturated and/or trans fats, incorporation of a high-fiber diet, and also using the glycemic index... will really help get the average person to their ideal weight, and keep them there.

What is the difference between low glycemic index and low glycemic load?

oh and is it the same as following a diabetic diet? im confused cause the glycemic load diet seems more strict about whole wheat bread than the glycemic index. And wouldnt a diabetic diet be the same since it keeps your blood sugar stable no? Which one of the three is better? Is it bad not to eat bread?

actually, have u tried to type :
"glycemic index"

into any search engine? you would get a definition immediately

same with load.

What is Glycemic Index of The Food?

The Glycemic index is a system of measurement that determines the effect that carbohydrate consumption has on glucose levels in the body.

Because it is dependant on many variables, Glycemic index levels are not universal. Aspects like age, activity and insulin levels, when food is consumed, how much fiber or fat it contains, the amount of processing the food is subjected to, how it is prepared and in what combination it is eaten with other foods are all determining factors when trying to establish Glycemic index levels.

Generally Glycemic index values for diverse foods are determined by a measurement of the effect they have on blood glucose in comparison to an equal carbohydrate portion of a relative food. The Glycemic index (GI) is a barometer for how the bodys glucose levels react to particular foods when they are rated on a scale from zero to one hundred, with glucose content recording the highest rating.

Most nutritionists agree that the lower the Glycemic index of any particular food, the more beneficial it is to bodily functions. Because foods with a low Glycemic index rating release glucose into the blood stream at a slower rate, blood sugar levels are not as apt to spike and therefore are more easily absorbed by the body. Foods with high Glycemic index ratings are not as readily metabolized by the body and thus create a greater strain on the digestive system and how the body deals with high blood glucose levels.

Traditionally recognized as high carbohydrate foods, bread, pasta and potatoes also have high GI ratings - yet it is difficult make blanket determinations as white bread will have a higher GI rating than wholegrain or rye bread due to the high content of grains and complex carbohydrates contained in breads made of highly processed white flour. Wheat bran, barley and oats are considered low Glycemic foods as are fruit, most beans and soy based foods. White bread, sugar laden soft drinks, creamy ice-cream and other so-called junk foods are high in glucose.

Adjusting diet so the low Glycemic levels are predominant can be accomplished by reducing intake of foods with high glucose ratings such as white bread, processed cereals, candy, chocolate bars and other junk food while making foods with lower glucose levels a bigger priority in the diet.

For those wanting to lose weight, low Glycemic index foods naturally release energy into the bloodstream slower, which can result in less frequent feelings of hunger, and consequently help to control appetite.
In order to maintain a low Glycemic index, nutritionists recommend that white bread be replaced with whole grain. In addition increasing the intake of more fruits and vegetables appears to have a supplementary positive effect on glucose absorption by the bloodstream.

It is also recommended that one read all packaging labels and attempt to choose foods that contain little or no processed sugar and highly processed carbohydrates. Every living cell still does need 8 natural sugars which are also called glyconutrients.

Low Carb Diets Don't Work

Atkins sets a "twenty grams of carbs daily" rule which can only come from fibrous rich food sources such as vegetables. You can fool people in the short term with a clever marketing campaign, but not in the long-term.

The current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for carbohydrate is a minimum of 130 grams per day, with most people eating well over 200 grams per day.

Carbohydrates are the foundation of diets world wide. Carbohydrates — including bread, pasta, rice, cereals, milk, most fruit and any sweets — usually provide over half of people's daily calories.

Most Low Carb diets work in the beginning, usually because the suggested eating regimens help you cut calories in one way or another. The underlying reason why diets (including Low Carb diets) work is that they result in decreased caloric intake.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association recommends that carbohydrates make up 55% of low to moderately active individuals daily diet.

Rather than focusing purely on reducing the number of carbohydrates, most Low Carb diets are structured according to what is known as the Glycemic Index. When you don’t adequately eat enough carbohydrates for long periods of time your body suffers. Fad diets that are low in carbohydrates are no good for your body.

Plan to write down your goals and steps you need to take to lose body fat. Low carb diets are an excellent way to lose body fat.in the short term.

There is some appreciable weight loss in the first few weeks, but most people who try the diet lose interest quickly and regain the weight. Anecdotal evidence and recent studies both conclude that following a strict low-carb diet will in fact help you lose weight.

You need to understand that the only way to lose fat is to burn more calories in a day then you consume. In the 1990s, we were erroneously told that all fat was bad for us.

Just make sure you go easy on the dressing and you can have large bowls of salad and still lose weight. Most people do lose weight on low-carb diets.

Intermittent Fasting seems to help tremendously with allowing you to lose fat while preserving muscle. The point is this: if you are looking to lose weight in a hurry, eliminating carbs will accomplish the task.

Lose Weight and Avoid the Flu This Holiday Season, While Everyone Else is Getting Sick

One of the main reasons that people get sick with a cold or the flu, is because of all the sugar, candy and desserts that most people binge on during the holiday seasons.

It all starts with Halloween night.

We know that eating mass quantities of candy is linked to all sorts of health problems and can lead to food addiction, which can sometimes last a lifetime. Healthy foods are not nearly as addictive.

Have you ever heard of someone being addicted to carrots? What were the consequences?

You see, at Halloween, the weather drastically gets colder real fast during this time of year, and this can lower your body's resistance to catching a cold.

This is because your body is not used to the rapid change in temperature, and it temporarily "shocks" your body. (If you don't dress properly.)

Also all of the "simple sugars" in the candy that everyone is eating "feeds germs" and lets them multiply rapidly in your body.

Most candy has very little, if any fiber in it, which in turn can cause constipation.

This combination of simple sugars, constipation and germs, results in rapidly multiplying germs, with plenty of "fuel", and a sluggish digestive tract, which lets the germs have plenty of time to multiply before they are eliminated.

If you have ever made bread you know that the yeasts eat the sugars, which makes air bubbles, which makes the dough "fluffy" for baking.

This happens in your body also, but there is no "baking" to eventually "kill off the yeast". So the yeast just have a feast and just keep on their multiplying. This is one of the major causes of gas pains.

Yeast love to live in the human body. The human body is like a hotel for yeast, and germs. There are always yeast and germs in your body, but that doesn't mean that you have to feed them their favorite food. (White sugar)

So right after Halloween, almost all kids at school are full of sugar, probably constipated, low resistance to infection, (from running around Halloween night in the cold and eating candy) and around thousands of other people, five days out of the week while at school.

So it's kind of like a domino effect. A few kids at school start sneezing, spreads all of their germs into the air, and everybody else is there, full of sugar, and have no choice but to breath in the germs.

When the germs come into contact with the sugars from the candy in their body, they start rapidly multiplying and taking over and invading your bodily systems. (Germs and yeast love sugar.)

Next thing you know, many people at school are sick, and then you have many people sneezing, and the process repeats itself over and over until most of the people at school are sick in one way or another.

Runny nose, cough, headache, gas pains, can't sit still and focus because of the "sugar high" (aka: attention deficit disorder), and the teachers don't like it if you disrupt the classroom and go to the bathroom to have diarrhea. (Which is one of your body's ways of trying to quickly get rid of the toxic overload in our digestive tract.)

Then the kids come home all sick (the parents probably give them seven up and crackers = more sugar and no fiber) sneezing all over their parents, then the parents take the germs and candy to work. Then they eat at a restaurant and spread the germs to the restaurant employees, then they sneeze into all the food, (you never see what goes on in that kitchen) and spread the germs to everyone that eats there.

The fast food restaurants distribute the germs to the population as fast as they can drive through the drive through. If they order a soda or milkshake with their germs, its time for the germs to multiply. This process repeats itself over and over again until the entire population has the germs in their bodies. You can't escape the germs no matter what.

What you can do is to not eat the foods that let the germs "multiply like crazy" before your immune system has a chance to keep them under control.

Sugars give germs plenty of "fuel" to multiply like crazy in your digestive track. Sugars also lets yeast multiply like crazy in your digestive track.

You see, yeast and germs can not easily live and multiply on certain foods, (like olive oil, almonds, fresh raw lemon juice, raw orange juice, cooked green beans, raw carrots, and many other foods.)

So if you eat the right foods, in the right combinations, in the right proportions, and stop eating mass quantities of sugars, then you will not set up your immune system for a battle that it does not want to deal with. Your body will however go to battle, and it usually wins, but it is going to drag you into the fight, and you are going to feel the consequences.

The best way to avoid battle wounds is to not give your enemy tons of weapons. Yeast and germs is your body's enemy, and simple sugars are their ammunition.

When you are on the proper diet, you will naturally be more resistant to catching a cold or the flu. This holiday season you don't have to follow the crowd. Just decide that it is not worth it to be sick. Include more fresh raw fruits and vegetables into your diet, and forget about the candy and desserts.

If you do this you might find that you will lose weight over the holidays, while everyone else is gaining weight, and miserably sick with "the flu".

Will this help me lose weight?

Well, I lost a good amount of weight this summer by avoiding sweets, exercising an hour a day, drinking green tea and lots of water, I ate fruits and good food. I did this for about a month and I lost 10 pounds.
But now(especially during the winter) I started gaining back the weight and I weight even more than I used to weight. I will start the diet schedule by eating various and drinking water, but I wonder is it good to exercise 1 hour of cardio 2 days per week and 5 days per week to take a paced walk for about half an hour? Will this help me to shed the unwanted pounds?
Btw, I have 150 pounds and 5.4 ft.

I think that you're really commited, and its a great idea. Just make sure not to over do it, or hurt your body. Also, eat small meals frequently, and chew gum, it helps control your intake of food. Be sure to get all the food groups, especially protein. And whenever you have to wait for 2 minutes or something, whther you're using the microwave or waiting for a phone call, do quick, heart-racing exercises to get your heart up, it'll help you burn more. Take intervals between your cardio so your heart rate is up longer, thus burning more calories. Try 94% fat free microwave popcorn, its filling, low calorie, and healthy. Best of luck

A Healthy Low Glycemic Diet

Introduction: low glycemic diets are good for everyone but the people who need these diets most are Diabetics and those trying to lose weight. Foods are measured by GI glycemic indexing.

What is glycemic indexing (GI)? The glycemic index ranks from 1 to 100.This is the method by which foods are measured and shows the amount a food will raise blood sugar and insulin levels. The rate at which your blood sugar rises is very important in managing diabetes and weight maintenance. High glycemic foods are those that are quickly digested and turned into sugar. They will cause a considerable rise in high blood sugar. Foods ranking 70 or greater on the GI scale are considered high glycemic foods. Examples of these foods are:

Foods high in sugar or glucose

* Baked or mashed potatoes
* White Rice
* White (not whole grain) bread
* Cookies, cakes, muffins, doughnuts-made with refined white flour
* Junk foods

Low glycemic foods include some fruits and vegetables they are 55 or less on the GI scale. Examples of these are:

* Most fruits (apples, pears, oranges, berries, etc.)
* High fiber grains (bran, whole grain wheat's)
* Pastas
* Whole milk
* Low-fat yogurt
* Lentils
* Whole grain cereals

Why use a low Glycemic Diets: High glycemic foods can cause weight gain and are dangerous for those suffering from Diabetes. High glycemic foods increase your appetite, and cause your body to increase triglycerides. They can also lead to weight gain. Cutting carbohydrates is not enough. You need to be aware of how all the food you eat measures up to the GI index.

Protein foods such as cheese, vegetables, eggs and fresh meat are not included in the GI index because they do not include large amounts of carbohydrates. Therefore these foods can be eaten when you are on a low glycemic diet.

Diabetes is a life threatening disease when not taken care of and it is very important to be aware of the glycemic index of the foods you eat. One of the first methods of treatment is to put these patients on a low glycemic diet. This will help them to lower their blood sugar levels and maintain a normal blood sugar level.

Obesity: A low glycemic diet will also help you lose weight. Eating more protein foods and low glycemic foods will help you drop those pounds and when you maintain a low glycemic diet will help you sustain your weight.

Eating in a healthier manner is just a matter of understanding the different foods and paying attention to what you eat. Educate yourself a little on which foods are high in protein and low in glycemic levels and you will be able to improve your health and have more energy to do the things that are really important to you.
