What diets would you consider extreme and unhealthy?

Yes, You Can Diet and Be Healthy

It seems there are many people who believe dieting means extreme denial of any satisfying food; that when on a diet you will always feel hungry and tired. For these people, the idea of a diet is something to dread because of the low energy and overall feeling of deprivation. It's no wonder so many people worry about how healthy it is to diet.

It doesn't have to be this way. As a start, look at the word diet itself. It has come to be used in a way that hides its true meaning. Most people think of the word diet as meaning an extreme reduction in calories eaten in order to lose weight. While this is one meaning of the word, it is not the main one. The word diet actually refers to the selection of foods and drinks that a person normally eats each day. Your diet is what you eat. If you can learn to make healthy choices in what you eat every day, your diet will automatically be healthy.

Now, the word diet can also be used to describe the act of reducing calories or limiting food intake in order to lose weight. Let's alter that idea just slightly. We will consider dieting to mean making a conscious effort to make healthy choices in food and drink. You do not need to feel deprived in order to lose weight. How is this done?

The first step would be to educate yourself on what constitutes a healthy diet. Learn about the most important nutrients and which foods are the best sources. Learn about empty calories and processed foods and the chemicals found in them which are detrimental to your health. It is a good idea to try to eat a variety of foods in a state as close to their natural state as possible. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a perfect example. All the processing that goes into prepared foods not only removes a good portion of the important nutrients, but the processing also adds very unhealthy ingredients to the food.

And now for the most important thing you can do in order to diet and be healthy at the same time - Drink plenty of water. As simple as it sounds, most people in the United States are close to being dehydrated every day. Soda and other unhealthy drinks do not provide your body with the water it needs. Simply replacing all soda in your diet with water will be a great first step in losing weight. Think of all the extra sugar in those sodas; not to mention all the other junk. Drink plenty of water every day and you will feel more energetic, too.

By making an effort each day to choose the foods that best meet the needs of your body, it is very possible to diet and be healthy at the same time. It is a better long-term path to take in living a healthy lifestyle. And you will feel good about taking control of your health and weight.

What diets would you consider extreme and unhealthy?

I'm trying to do research about obesity and dieting habits in America. A lot of the diets I am seeing are pretty brutal. What are the craziest diets you have taken? Do you know anyone who has jeopardized their health from dieting? And what extremes have you gone to?

People that do only the one part of the master cleanse. i.e. distilled water, lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper. When they do it for more than 3 days, it can be very unhealthy since your body isn't getting minerals like sodium and potassium which are pretty much necessary for your heart to beat!!

I had a friend who did this for 10 days and he lost weight alright, he lost muscle!! He also had decreased brain function....
